Almost my entire life I have been intrigued by the natural world around me. I’ve tried to capture the world in creative ways – drawing, painting, sculpting and creating functional art from clay.
Taking dirt from the earth, mixing it with water and firing it with wood seems so natural and a part of who I am. Like life, the studio and the firing is always emerging and I’m always learning something new.
Redfield River Pottery studio sits next to the Rum River in Cambridge, Minnesota. My kiln is nestled in our backyard next to a quaint little kiln shed overlooking the embankment that leads to the river.
Maple trees, hills, walking paths, ski trails, and gardens lead one through the timeless entity of God’s beautiful creation. My favorite time to work in the studio is when the large snowflakes are falling and I look out my window in quiet peaceful beauty. I try to reflect that peace in my work.
Each piece is unique and given special attention, then it goes in the bisque fire, glazed and fired from early morning before daybreak and throughout the day and into the night. The wood ash floats through the firing process, just like snowflakes, bringing natural beauty to each piece.
Enjoy a little peace like the river in each vessel while touched by your hands, sipped from your lips and viewed by your eyes. The art of a functional vessel is pleasantly special.
